Curriculum Subject Overview

Subject: PSHE

Intent:

Our intention is to  design a curriculum with appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding to fulfil the new National Curriculum PSHE three strands health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world. Relationship and Sex Education will be taught in line with the Cambridge University scheme.

Our goal  is that, when children leave Bramley Park Academy, they do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active role in today’s society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it.

We want our children to:

Develop a confidence in sharing their own thoughts and opinions with others.

Develop skills and attributes to keep themselves healthy and safe.

Develop an attitude of a responsible global citizen.

To show tolerance of others beliefs, religions and life choices.

To build positive, respectful relationships with other people.

Early Years Intent:

Our aim in the Early Years is to build a strong foundation rooted in academic success as well as moral and spiritual development so that ultimately our pupils can be successful and go on to be active citizens of society and happy, curious, life long learners.

In Early Years, PSHE is covered within the PSED element of the curriculum. We look at Personal, Social and Emotional Development and how we can support children and each other in developing good strategies to deal with all our feelings and everyday situations.

Pupils learn through a balance of child initiated and adult led activities and the timetable is structured to ensure children have regular sessions with a PSED focus. Practitioners ensure PSED opportunities are planned and offered to meet the needs of all children within the setting and activities and resources are accessible for children to access and use independently.

Implementation:

All pupils have a weekly PSHE lesson which lasts at least 20 minutes.

Medium term planning  and lesson plans have been given to all staff which has been developed by PSHE lead in guidance with The PSHE Association to meet the needs of our pupils.

Assemblies are planned to cover any additional sessions that would benefit the whole school including topics based on SMSC and British Values.

During assemblies, we invite guests from our communities in, including Olympic athletes, librarians, authors and local artists.

There are displays across school including displays based on SMSC, PSHE and British Values to reinforce key themes and allow children to make links.

We ensure that all subjects make a link to PSHE and SMSC and the language is used appropriately.

Impact

At Bramley Park Academy:

Children can approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life.

Children have had exposure to a range of global issues and problems allowing them to build up their tolerance and sense of responsibility of being a global citizen.

Have engaged with a variety of resources and can understand the different lifestyles that people may live and be respectful and tolerant towards those leading different lives to themselves.

Children’s personal development is high and children have a variety of skills that they can use to support themselves in the wider world.

Children feel a sense of pride and belonging in Bramley and Leeds and feel proud of where they come from.

Children are well-adapted, well-adjusted individuals, who understand that not everyone’s the same and that is celebrated.
