French

Curriculum subject overview

Subject: French

Intent:

The core language taught at Bramley Park Academy is French.

At Bramley Park Academy, we believe that children should be taught to develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We believe that the learning of a language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It helps them to develop communication skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, with an aim of making substantial progress in one language. In addition, children’s knowledge of how language works will be developed to lay the foundations for further language learning in future. We believe that learning another language gives children a new and broader perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of our children’s primary education, they have acquired an understanding of both spoken and written French, confidence to speak in French with others and know how important other languages can be in their future.

Implementation:

Children develop their love of language learning and develop skills throughout their time in school.

In KS1 and KS2, children are taught in 20 minute weekly sessions by their class teachers. In Early Years children are exposed to different languages and cultures on a regular basis to spark their curiosity and inspire their imagination through Knowledge and Understanding the world topics.

Our planning follows the Le Jolie Ronde scheme of work which covers all the components of the Programme of Study. which is adapted to meet the needs of our own children. The topics covered in each year group can be found on the French curriculum area of our school website. At Bramley park Academy, we acknowledge that children learn in different ways. We aim to meet these needs by  learning through active participation in actions, rhymes, stories, song, grammar focus, video clips, sentence structure, dictionary work, book making and many more creative ways to extend, embed and combine language skills.

Our French curriculum will ensure all pupils develop key language learning skills, as set out by the national curriculum, as well as a love of languages and learning about other cultures. These are as follows:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied

Impact:

As a result of the introduction of the new French scheme of work and long term plan, teachers are beginning to increase their confidence and skills in teaching french to all year groups and improve their own knowledge and CPD.  This is improving the quality and content of French lessons being taught throughout school and impacting positively on the pupils’ learning.
